La Plata

La Plata, MD

La Plata is the county seat of Charles County, Maryland and hosts many county offices. Legend has it that La Plata got its name from a wealthy land holder named Colonel Samuel Chapman who traveled to Uruguay and Argentina in search of medical cures. When he returned home, he named part of his expansive land after the Rio de la Plata, because it is the widest river in the world.

Attractions in this area include the historic Catholic convent, Mount Carmel, the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, a large outdoor athletic complex, many stores and restaurants, and a weekly farmer’s market. La Plata is home to the College of Southern Maryland, La Plata Campus, a regionally accredited community college that offers the Maryland transfer Advantage Program (MTAP) that allows CSM students a seamless transfer to the University of Maryland system.
